BLACK DOGS OF BRITAIN - ENGLAND

The British term "black dog" is used to refer to apparitions or creatures who typ­ically resemble black dogs, although it is also refers to canine apparitions of other colors and types. Black dogs, also referred to as shuck dogs, have been widely reported throughout Great Britain.

1. Shuck, Black Shuck, or Old Shuck, as it is called in Norfolk, is said to be one of the oldest phantoms of Great Britain. The name is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word scucca meaning "demon or devil:' Shuck is said to be a word that imitates the sound of chains being dragged across the ground. Black Shuck was the inspira­tion for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Hound of the Baskervilles. Conan Doyle is best known, of course, as the creator of Sherlock Holmes.

2. During the days when Charles II was king of England, Moddey Dhoo, or Mauthe Doog, was often seen by the soldiers of Peer Castle, laying himself down by the hearth of the military barracks.

3. Trash, as the dog is referred to in Lancashire, makes a sound like heavy shoes splashing through mud.

4. Skriker, another name for the Lan­cashire black dog, is said to emit screaming sounds.

5. Morphing Shuck of Bristol was seen to climb out from a hedge be­fore transforming into a donkey and standing on his hind legs.

6. Barghest, Barghaist, Barguest, Barguest, or Barnghaist of Yorkshire was reputed to have large, saucer­shaped eyes.

7. Capelthwaite of Westmorland had shape-shifting abilities and was as Large as a calf.

8. Padfoot in Staffordshire was as big as a calf and haunted lonely roads.

9. Suicide Shuck, as it is called in Tivington, is thought to contain the soul of a local man who committed sui­cide.

10. Lost travelers in Somerset were Led to safety by Gurt Dog.

11. The black dogs of Wales are called Gwyllgi. The name means "wild dog" or "dog of darkness:'

12. Muckle BLack Tyke ("Chain Dubh" in Gaelic) is a fairy dog of Scotland who appears either in green or in white.

13. Pooka, a great black fairy dog of Ireland, was generally seen at the gloaming (dusk) at bridges, river· banks, and crossroads.
